Atwood Community Park Project Advances with $324,939 CAP Grant 

ATWOOD, Ind. — Community members and project partners came together in Atwood on Thursday to celebrate a major step for the Atwood Community Park project, as a $324,939 Community Amenities Program (CAP) grant was presented by Orthoworx and the K21 Health Foundation. The CAP funds are part of the Orthopedic Industry Retention Initiative (OIRI) that helps create new public amenities within the smaller communities in the county.  

Planned on a 6+ acre site, Atwood Park will include a playground, basketball court, covered pavilion, and a renovated walking path, creating opportunities for active living, connection, and community events. 

The total project is expected to cost nearly $650,000, with more than $300,000 raised locally through contributions from businesses, organizations, and community members. Many individuals have stepped forward in meaningful ways, including one family who contributed a $40,000 gift in memory of loved ones who spent time walking the trail together. This significant level of community support represents one of the strongest local fundraising efforts among Community Amenities Program projects to date. 

“I’m just thrilled by the outpouring of support we received from local businesses, organizations and especially individuals who decided this would be a great investment that will benefit our community for many years to come,” said Amy Irwin, a member of the Atwood Community Park fundraising committee. “I had no idea what to expect when we started this project, but needless to say, we were amazed by the positive response we got from everyone.” 

Site preparation for the project is already underway, driven in part by volunteer efforts, with construction scheduled to begin in July. The park is anticipated to be completed in October 2026. 

The Atwood Community Park project reflects a shared commitment from local partners and organizations like ALL IN Kosciusko to invest in spaces that enhance quality of life, strengthen connections, and support long-term community growth. 

Once complete, the park will serve as a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike, offering a welcoming environment designed to encourage recreation, wellness, and meaningful connection throughout the Atwood community.  

“This is quite an achievement for a community like Atwood to come together and raise this sizable amount of money for the good of their community,” said Rich Haddad, CEO, K21 Health Foundation. “It just shows what can be done when people unite around a common vision and are determined to make a difference together.”
